What To Expect
Our Approach
-
We hold our programs within the container of a rite of passage, giving the experience a meaningful beginning, a transformative middle, and an intentional return.
A severance or send-off marks the transition out of everyday life and into a shared journey. The threshold is the experience itself: the challenges, discoveries, relationships, and moments of reflection that shape the journey, culminating in a solo experience where participants craft an “intention statement” articulating their dreams for their future. Reincorporation, or return, offers space to share those experiences and incorporate them back into everyday life.
This structure helps participants recognize their journey as something meaningful— not simply an adventure, but an opportunity for growth, insight, and change.

We build a relationship with the land by exploring the cultures, natural history, and ecology of each place we visit. Learning is hands-on, curious, and grounded in direct experience: getting to know plants and animals through close observation from beetles to bears and worms to whales.
By paying attention to the details of a place and the relationships that sustain it, we cultivate a sense of wonder, belonging, and care for the natural world.
-
Life thrives through relationships, reciprocity, and contribution.
We explore how these principles shape both ecological systems and human communities, inviting participants to recognize their interdependence and consider what it means to show up for one another. Through service with our designated community partners and the everyday work of expedition life—preparing meals, caring for shared gear, supporting crewmates, and navigating challenges together—participants put these principles into practice.
We teach that healthy communities depend on everyone contributing to the whole, and that even small acts of care can make a meaningful difference.

Both discussion circles and solo time offer complementary ways to process experiences, deepen our understanding of the world around us, and tune in to our own thoughts and feelings.
In discussion circles, participants practice expressing what's on their minds, listening actively, and making room for perspectives different from their own.
Every program also includes a solo experience (length and structure is shaped by age, group comfort, and individual readiness). Participants build toward solo time through shorter “sit-spots”. Facilitated by guides who attend to safety needs, solo time offers an opportunity to slow down, reckon with boredom, build confidence, connect with the world, and reflect on one's experiences and place within it.

We use ceremony as a way to mark transitions, honor relationships, and give shape to things that can be difficult to see or put into words.
Rather than borrowing rituals from other cultures or prescribing particular beliefs, we invite participants to explore what feels meaningful to them by drawing on their own spiritual, religious, or philosophical backgrounds (or their sense of connection to something beyond the tangible). Participation is always optional.
These moments can be simple but powerful. For example, at the beginning of a journey, guides step across a threshold (often a fallen tree branch) and sharing their intentions and hopes for the journey as a gesture of entering into guardianship of participants. Participants might also create a flag representing their community agreements, sing songs, or give gratitude before dinner.
Through acts like these, we practice making meaning together and intentionally marking the moments that shape us.
-
The journey doesn't end when the expedition does. We intentionally involve families and other supporters in the send-off and return, making space for them to witness, understand, and participate in the learning.
Through shared stories, reflection, and opportunities to make meaning together, participants can articulate what they've experienced while their supporters learn how to recognize and nurture that growth beyond the program.
By including the people who matter in participants' lives, we help bridge the expedition experience with the communities to which they return.
-
Play is a powerful way to learn.
Through games, creative challenges, exploration, and shared adventures, we cultivate curiosity, creativity, cooperation, and resilience. Play gives us room to experiment, take risks, navigate uncertainty, and learn from what happens along the way.
Whether we're solving a problem together, engaging with the landscape, or simply sharing laughter, we discover that learning can be joyful, memorable, and deeply connected to experience.
